Senator Akpoti Rejects Suspension, Calls for Justice

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has described her suspension from the Senate as “an injustice that will not stand.”
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker was suspended for six months on Thursday after the Senate’s disciplinary committee found her guilty of breaching parliamentary rules following her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Reacting to the decision, a defiant Senator Natasha rejected the suspension, vowing to continue her “pursuit of justice.”
Her suspension was recommended by the Senate disciplinary committee, which presented its report to lawmakers during Thursday’s plenary session. The committee had investigated allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of office against Senate President Akpabio.

According to the committee’s findings, the 45-year-old lawyer violated Senate rules and was, therefore, to be suspended for six months. Despite calls from some lawmakers to reduce the suspension, the majority voted in favour of the full six-month term.
Senator Akpabio, who presided over the plenary, read the resolutions, stating that the Senate might reconsider Natasha’s suspension if she submits a “written apology” to the chamber.
The committee had also recommended withholding her salary and those of her aides during the suspension period. However, following an appeal by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, this measure was overturned.
“Her aides are not Natasha,” Senator Kalu argued. “It would be unfair for the Senate to deprive them of their allowances.”
Senator Natasha’s dispute with Akpabio began on 20th February 2025, when her seat was unexpectedly changed. She protested the move, leading to a heated exchange on the Senate floor. This confrontation escalated into allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State—accusations he has vehemently denied.
She submitted a petition to the Senate on Thursday, but it was dismissed before her suspension was officially announced the following day.
