$6,000 and £53,000 Mystery: EFCC Probes Airport Travellers Caught with Hidden Cash

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced an investigation into two travellers apprehended with undeclared foreign currencies amounting to over $6,180 and £53,415 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Terminal 2, Lagos.

The EFCC disclosed this in a statement on Saturday signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.

According to the statement, operatives from the Commission’s Lagos Zonal Directorate in Ikoyi identified the suspects as Mamud Nasidi and Yahaya Nasidi.

They were reportedly arrested by officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) during a routine check on Saturday.

“Upon arrest, the suspects — who were scheduled to travel to Abuja after arriving in the country from Dubai via Addis Ababa — were immediately handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS), which subsequently transferred them to the Commission for further investigation and prosecution,” the statement said.

It added that three mobile phones were also recovered from the suspects.

“The suspects and the exhibits were received by CSE Margaret Lamai on behalf of the Acting Zonal Director, Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Ahmed Ghali,” the Commission noted.
