CAN Condemns Killings, Urges Dialogue and National Unity

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the ongoing violence across the country and urged citizens to shun actions that could further destabilise Nigeria.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, raised concerns on Sunday following a surge in brutal attacks in the Middle Belt region, especially in Benue, Gombe, and Plateau states.

He stressed the need for urgent national dialogue and unity to address the insecurity plaguing affected communities.

Curiously, over 48 hours after reports of an alleged attack on a military base in Yobe State, the Nigerian military remained silent. Meanwhile, suspected armed herdsmen killed four people in Benue State on Saturday morning.

In a statement, Okoh reaffirmed CAN’s commitment to advocating for the safety, security, and dignity of all Nigerians.

“We will not relent in our pursuit of justice and lasting peace,” he stated.

CAN noted that it had already visited affected communities to express solidarity, distribute relief materials, and offer condolences. More outreach is planned in the coming days.

The association urged Nigerians of all backgrounds to support peace initiatives, especially in the North-Central geopolitical zone.

“Engagement with stakeholders across professional, ethnic, and religious lines is essential for promoting dialogue and mutual understanding,” the statement read. It warned that any actions that inflame tensions pose a serious threat to national stability.

CAN also called for open and sincere dialogue, including the involvement of international partners and local platforms such as the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC).

Archbishop Okoh noted, “We believe that trusted platforms like NIREC offer a credible space for collaborative problem-solving.”

He concluded by urging citizens to embrace peace and unity, stating, “The strength of our nation lies in our unity.”
