Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inspected the Festac-Alakija Bridge following an attempt by suspected vandals to damage portions of the structure, assuring residents that the bridge remains safe and structurally sound.

Sanwo-Olu made an on-the-spot assessment of the bridge alongside contractors, members of the State Executive Council, and local government chairmen.

In a post on X on Saturday, his media aide, Gboyega Akosile, shared images showing the governor inspecting the pillars of the bridge.

The governor assured residents of the structural integrity of the bridge, while warning that the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on vandals and buyers of vandalised government property.

Sanwo-Olu also urged residents to desist from unscrupulous practices and help protect public infrastructure.

“Earlier today, I inspected the Alakija Bridge following an attempt by vandals to damage part of the structure.

“Let me reassure Lagosians that the bridge is safe, structurally sound and ready for use. There is no cause for alarm.

“I commend our security teams across the Police, RRS, Task Force, KAI and Neighbourhood Safety Corps for acting quickly to secure the area. Some of those involved are already in custody, and we are going after the rest,” the governor stated on his X handle on Saturday.

“Let me be clear, anyone who attempts to destroy public infrastructure in Lagos will face the full force of the law.

“We are also keeping our commitment to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor. The ongoing clean-up is already making a visible difference, and the work will continue.

“We all have a role to play in keeping Lagos safe and protecting what belongs to all of us,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu had on Friday directed security agencies to go after those responsible for the vandalism of the Festac-Alakija Bridge.

In a statement signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the governor condemned the incident, describing vandalism as “barbaric and criminal”, and warned that anyone found culpable would face the law.

“Lagos will not tolerate any act of vandalism because it is barbaric and criminal,” Sanwo-Olu had said.
