Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has completed a transfer from Italian Serie A side Atalanta to Spain’s Atlético Madrid, the clubs have confirmed.

The 28-year-old Nigerian international has signed a contract with the former La Liga champions until 30 June 2030. Reports indicate the transfer fee is approximately €40 million (£34.2 million).

Lookman, a versatile right-footed attacker, joins Atlético after a successful spell in Italy, most notably scoring a hat-trick in Atalanta’s 2024 Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen. This season, he has netted three times in 19 appearances across all competitions.

Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton. A permanent transfer to RB Leipzig followed in 2019, preceded by a loan at the German club. He subsequently had loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City prior to his switch to Atalanta in 2022.

The acquisition addresses a need for reinforcements identified by Atlético manager Diego Simeone, following the winter departures of Giacomo Raspadori to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher to Tottenham Hotspur. The move also comes as striker Julián Álvarez endures a goal drought, having failed to score in his last 11 league matches.
