UPDATED: Oba Sikiru Adetona, Nigeria’s Longest-Serving Monarch, Dies at 91

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday in Abeokuta by the governor’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade.

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland,” the statement read.

Governor Abiodun said the respected monarch passed away on 13 July 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that shaped not only Ijebuland but also Ogun State and Nigeria at large.

“It is indeed a double tragedy that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors on the same day that former President Muhammadu Buhari died in a London hospital,” he added.

Describing Oba Adetona as a visionary traditional ruler, Governor Abiodun noted that the monarch ascended the throne in 1960, marking the beginning of a transformative era for Ijebuland.

“Throughout his reign, he served as a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development,” the governor said.

He highlighted the late monarch’s deep commitment to the welfare of his people, which was evident in his support for education, healthcare, and economic development across Ogun State and beyond.

“Under his leadership, Ijebuland witnessed notable improvements in infrastructure and community development, becoming a model of progress in the state,” Abiodun said.

He also praised the monarch for elevating the cultural significance of the Ojude Oba festival, which he said gained international recognition under his stewardship.

“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Oba Adetona. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his people will forever remain in our hearts,” the governor said.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may we continue to uphold the values he instilled during his illustrious reign,” he concluded.
