Court Remands Sowore in Kuje Correctional Centre Pending Hearing

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of Mr. Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), in the Kuje Correctional Centre.

In a brief ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar directed that Sowore be held in the correctional facility pending the hearing and determination of his motion seeking a stay of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.

The judge also dismissed Sowore’s earlier application seeking his recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias.

Justice Umar subsequently adjourned the matter until June 24 for the hearing of the application for stay.

The motion was filed by the defendant’s new counsel, Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN. Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court accompanied by members of his group carrying placards.

Justice Umar had, on June 16, revoked the bail earlier granted to Sowore following his failure to appear in court for his trial.

In a ruling delivered after an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, the judge also issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against President Bola Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X and Facebook accounts.
