Pastor Chris Okafor Decries Cyberbullying, Calls for Regulation of Nigeria’s Cyberspace
Dr. Chris Okafor, televangelist and founding pastor of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministry, has decried what he described as rampant cyberbullying in Nigeria and has called for the regulation of the nation’s cyberspace.
Dr. Okafor made the call on Thursday at a news conference in Lagos, convened to express his displeasure with the activities of bloggers and online influencers in the country.
In November 2025, Nollywood actress Ms. Doris Ogala accused Dr. Okafor of a long-term affair and of reneging on a promise to marry her. She also accused the pastor of murdering her brother and burying the head of an unidentified murdered person at his church altar, located in the Ojodu area of Lagos State.
Dr. Okafor said that while the allegations played out in the media, what hurt him most was the bullying he suffered at the hands of bloggers and influencers who, he said, condemned him without evidence or hearing his side.
“It is so sad that most of the so-called influencers we have often connive with people to fabricate lies just to attract traffic to their blogs,” he said.
“Many Nigerians have suffered, and are still suffering, from the lies of bloggers, and most often they get away with it after destroying the image of their targets. Very few times, some influencers are arrested and taken to court, but about 90 per cent of them often go free for far-fetched lies against people.”
He said Nigeria must find a way to safeguard its internet space to ensure that innocent citizens are not destroyed by falsehoods that demean their image. According to him, there is a need for the National Assembly to enact legislation that would regulate the nation’s cyberspace and ensure that offenders are punished as a deterrent to others.
Dr. Okafor also urged the cybercrime unit of the Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts in tracing internet offences and apprehending offenders.
Recounting his ordeal, he lamented that many bloggers and Nigerians failed to interrogate the inconsistencies in the allegations against him.
“The same person who accused me of murder is the same person crying that I want to abandon her and marry someone else. How could she want to marry someone who allegedly killed her brother?” he asked.
“There is so much about the matter that does not meet the ordinary eye, with many unanswered questions and glaring lies. The allegations were coming from a woman I never met. Then my ex-wife joined in, alleging that I tried to defile one of our daughters.”
He added that the same ex-wife and daughter later approached a popular blogger to demand that he pay about ₦80 million for their school fees and upkeep abroad.
“The same father they said tried to defile them? Which woman would do that?” he queried.
Dr. Okafor said the controversies began after his plans to remarry were leaked by a wedding planner, after which, he claimed, people attempted to exploit the situation.
He recalled that during divorce proceedings he instituted in 2014 at an Ikeja court, the grounds cited were infidelity, violence, lack of love, and irreconcilable differences. He noted that at no point during the proceedings did his ex-wife allege that he attempted to defile their daughter.
“The court awarded me custody of our children, and no one raised such allegations then,” he said.
“If, as a pastor, I can survive these lies, what happens to the average Nigerian?”
Dr. Okafor reassured his church members and Nigerians that the truth would eventually emerge, expressing confidence that justice would prevail.
“In the 55 years of my existence on earth, I have never been arrested for any crime or offence. It is sad how far people can go to destroy others,” he added.
