Can Nigeria’s Jollof Make History? Hilda Baci Awaits Guinness Verdict

Celebrity chef Hilda Baci has completed her attempt to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the largest pot of jollof rice.

On Saturday, the 28-year-old chef successfully cooked about 200 bags of rice in a giant 22,619-litre pot, six metres wide and six metres tall, over a nine-hour period. She had initially planned to use 250 bags of Basmati rice but reduced the number to 200 due to weighing challenges.

The event, tagged “Gino World Jollof Festival”, took place at Car Park B of Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. It drew a massive crowd of fans, food vendors, entertainers, and celebrities who came to support the chef.

After the rice was prepared, it was distributed in takeaway packs to more than 30,000 people. Guests were also encouraged to bring coolers to collect the excess food.

On Friday, ahead of the attempt, the Federal Government commended Baci for her effort. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the feat as another demonstration of Nigeria’s global excellence.

Speaking through Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, Idris said:
“We encourage more young Nigerians to channel their creativity and talents into ventures that will not only benefit them personally but also contribute to national development and global recognition.”

The event was graced by Nollywood stars and influencers including Funke Akindele, Bamike Olawunmi-Adenibuyan, Enioluwa Adeoluwa, and Tomike Adeoye. Students of the Bethesda Home and School for the Blind also attended to show their support.

Baci now awaits official confirmation from Guinness World Records. The feat adds to her growing list of culinary achievements and further spotlights Nigerian cuisine on the global stage.
