APC Adopts Direct Primary For 2026 Presidential Primary Election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled guidelines and committees for the conduct of its 2026 presidential primary election, adopting a direct primary mode that will allow all registered party members nationwide to participate in the exercise.

The party, in a document issued by its National Secretariat in Abuja, stated that the direct primary would be conducted across the country’s 8,809 wards on May 24, 2026.

According to the APC, every registered member of the party will be eligible to vote for the presidential aspirant of their choice during the exercise.

The party also disclosed that results from each ward would be collated at the local government level before being transmitted to the national collation centre in Abuja.

The document stated that the conduct of the primaries in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would be supervised by designated state coordinators and collation officers appointed by the party leadership.

It added that the earlier guidelines on the “Procedure for the Conduct of Direct and Consensus Mode of Primaries”, forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on May 15, 2026, would also apply to the presidential exercise.

Former Senate President, Senator Pius Anyim, was named chairman of the Presidential Primary Election Committee.

Other members include former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani; Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba; former Deputy Governor, Mrs. Grace Titi Laoye-Ponle; Mr. Yakubu Dogara; Mr. Idris Wada; while Senator Sanusi Musa will serve as secretary.

The party also constituted a Presidential Primary Election Appeal Committee headed by former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume.

The committee has Mr. Samuel Pwajok as secretary and Mrs. Patricia Etteh as a member.

Several serving and former governors were appointed as coordinators and collation officers for different states.

Among them is Governor Siminalayi Fubara for Rivers State, who recently withdrew from the party’s governorship primary election on Wednesday.

Others are Governors Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, and Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

Also included are Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, and former Osun State Governor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola.

“The organisation and conduct of the direct primary in each of the 36 states and the FCT shall be the responsibility of the State Coordinator and Collation Officer, who shall also collate the results of all the local governments in the state and present the same to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja, FCT, on 24 May, 2026.

“The provisions of the ‘Procedure for the Conduct of Direct and Consensus Mode of Primaries’ earlier issued and forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission under the cover of a letter dated 15 May 2026 with reference No: APC/NHDQ/INEC/PRYS-DOCS/01-05/26 shall also apply mutatis mutandis,” the document, signed by the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, partly read.
