Arsenal End 22-Year Wait for Premier League Glory as City Stumble at Bournemouth
Arsenal ended their 22-year wait to be crowned Premier League champions on Tuesday after Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth.
City needed victory to take the title race to the final day, but Bournemouth extended their unbeaten league run to 17 matches — a streak that has secured European football for the first time in the club’s history.
After finishing runners-up in each of the past three seasons, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have finally crossed the line, ending a six-year trophy drought in the process.
The Gunners moved to the brink of the title with an unconvincing 1-0 victory over already relegated Burnley on Monday, a result that put them five points clear of City.
Arsenal, who have led the pace for much of the campaign, responded impressively after losing to City last month, winning four consecutive league matches without conceding a goal.
On Monday, just 48 hours after completing a domestic cup double with victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final, City were shaken by widespread reports that manager Pep Guardiola will leave the club at the end of the season after a decade in charge.
Victory at Wembley on Saturday delivered the 20th trophy of Guardiola’s glittering reign, but he will not add a seventh Premier League title when Aston Villa visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in what is expected to be his final match as City manager.
Guardiola had warned beforehand that fatigue could prove costly against a highly motivated Bournemouth side still chasing Champions League qualification for next season.
As things stand, Bournemouth will compete in the Europa League after guaranteeing a finish no lower than seventh place.
Sixth place could yet secure Champions League qualification if Aston Villa finish fifth and win Wednesday’s Europa League final.
City supporters, sensing the significance of the occasion, chanted “One more year, Guardiola” during the early stages at the Vitality Stadium in a bid to persuade their decorated manager to remain for the final year of his contract.
However, if the travelling fans hoped the players would produce a performance worthy of a grand farewell, they were left bitterly disappointed.
Antoine Semenyo had the ball in the net on his return for Bournemouth, but the effort was ruled out for offside in what proved City’s best moment of an uninspiring first half.
The home side came alive in the 39th minute when Eli Junior Kroupi curled a superb strike into the top corner, setting a new record of 13 goals in a debut Premier League season for a teenager.
Nico O’Reilly squandered City’s clearest chance to respond when Djordje Petrovic denied him seconds after the restart.
Guardiola watched on pensively as his side’s title challenge faded away.
After winning what had been billed as a title decider against Arsenal last month, City handed the initiative back to their rivals by drawing 3-3 with Everton.
Guardiola now appears set to leave having failed to win the league in consecutive seasons for the first time in his managerial career.
Rayan Christie and David Brooks both struck the post as Bournemouth should have wrapped up victory in Andoni Iraola’s final home game in charge.
Erling Haaland’s equaliser deep into stoppage time ultimately arrived too late to rescue City’s fading title hopes.
However, the late goal could prove significant for Liverpool, who now hold a three-point advantage over Bournemouth, as well as a superior goal difference of six, heading into the final-day battle for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification.
