INEC to Commence Claims and Objections Exercise for Voter Register in Rivers
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Gabriel Yomere, disclosed this in a statement issued by the commission’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Geraldine Ekelemu.
Prof. Yomere stated that the exercise will begin on April 29 and end on May 5 across the commission’s 23 Local Government Area offices in the state. He explained that the exercise follows the conclusion of the second phase of the CVR and is designed to enable individuals who registered, transferred, or updated their voter details to verify their information.
He noted that the process will also allow voters to check for omissions or errors in their registration details, while providing an opportunity for the public to scrutinise the preliminary register and object to the inclusion of ineligible persons, including deceased individuals, foreigners, and underage registrants.
According to him, valid objections will result in the removal of such names from the preliminary voter register. He emphasised that the exercise is essential to ensuring the integrity of the register, which remains fundamental to the conduct of free, fair, and transparent elections.
Yomere urged all registered voters in the state to participate actively, noting that the exercise forms part of preparations for the 2027 general elections. He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to credible electoral processes and called on stakeholders to support the initiative to ensure its success.
