Tuggar Steps Down as Foreign Affairs Minister Amid Bauchi Governorship Speculation

Ahead of the 2027 General Election, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned.

His resignation was confirmed on Monday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The move followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 elections must resign on or before March 31.

The directive was based on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 polls.

Tuggar’s resignation comes amid speculation that he intends to contest the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election on the platform of the APC.

Appointed minister in August 2023, Tuggar is a diplomat and politician with experience spanning diplomacy, politics, energy, and strategic consulting.

Born on March 12, 1967, he served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, representing the Gamawa Constituency in Bauchi State. He later contested the state governorship in two election cycles.

From 2017 to 2023, Tuggar served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany, where he strengthened bilateral relations, expanded trade cooperation, and advanced Nigeria’s interests in Europe.

As Minister of Foreign Affairs, he led Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements under the Tinubu administration.
