Police Council Ratifies Disu as IGP, Tinubu to Swear Him In Wednesday
The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Disu as Inspector-General of Police.
In a statement issued by the presidential spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the endorsement paves the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday. The ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day.
The Council’s meeting, held at the State House, was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in accordance with the Constitution.
Also present were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike; and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State spoke glowingly of Mr. Disu, commending the Acting Inspector-General for his exemplary service, particularly during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State between 2015 and 2021. He noted that Mr. Disu’s leadership earned both him and the RRS recognition for excellence in crime control.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State also praised the President’s decision, describing the appointment as a reflection of Mr. Disu’s distinguished career record. Mr. Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, lauded Mr. Disu’s efficiency as a crime fighter and his strategic impact in addressing security concerns within the Federal Capital Territory. Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.
President Tinubu appointed Mr. Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police on 25 February 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Mr. Kayode Egbetokun. In an earlier statement, Mr. Onanuga said the President would convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Mr. Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his name would be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
The former Assistant Inspector-General assumed office as Acting IGP last Wednesday at a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja, shortly after President Tinubu decorated him with his new rank.
Until his appointment, Mr. Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police last year.
He previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and was later deployed by Mr. Egbetokun to Abuja as Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory.
Mr. Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and a former head of the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, a position previously held by Mr. Abba Kyari.
Born on 13 April 1966 in Lagos Island, Mr. Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on 18 May 1992. Over the course of his career, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State; Ikare and Owo, Ondo State; and Elimbu and Elelenwo, Rivers State.
He also served as Officer in Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and anti-kidnapping operations in Rivers State. Mr. Disu commanded SARS in Ondo, Oyo, and Rivers states, and later served as second-in-command of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Rivers State.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the former head of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad pledged to deliver accountable, modern, and professional policing.
“My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” Mr. Disu told a gathering of senior officers, family members, and other dignitaries.
