U.S. Lawmakers Urge Tough Measures on Nigeria as Trump Receives ‘Christian Genocide’ Report

United States President Donald Trump has received a comprehensive congressional report on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, following months of investigation by U.S. lawmakers.

The report was formally submitted to the White House by members of the United States House Committee on Appropriations and the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs. It details findings and policy recommendations concerning violence affecting Christian communities in Nigeria.

The submission follows Trump’s earlier redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and his directive to Congressman Riley Moore and Appropriations Committee Chairman Mr. Tom Cole to spearhead a detailed congressional inquiry into the country’s security situation.

Moore confirmed the submission in a post on X on Monday, stating that members of both committees met with White House officials to present the outcome of what he described as a months-long investigative exercise.

According to him, the findings were informed by expert witness interviews, congressional hearings, roundtables, bipartisan fact-finding missions to Nigeria, and consultations with officials within the Trump administration.

Moore had previously led a delegation to Nigeria, where members visited Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State, met victims of terrorism, and held discussions with senior government officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

He said the delegation now possesses a clearer understanding of the threats facing Christian communities and the broader security dynamics driving instability in parts of the country.

Key recommendations contained in the report include the establishment of a bilateral U.S.–Nigeria security agreement to protect vulnerable Christian communities and dismantle jihadist networks, the withholding of certain U.S. funds pending measurable action by the Nigerian government, and the imposition of sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals implicated in religious persecution.

Other proposals include providing technical assistance to address violence linked to armed Fulani militias, repealing Sharia and blasphemy laws, and coordinating with international partners such as France, Hungary, and the United Kingdom.

Moore commended President Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a CPC and reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to confront extremist violence.

“I travelled on a bipartisan delegation to Nigeria and saw with my own eyes the horrific atrocities Christians face and the instability the Nigerian government must combat,” Moore said.
