Kwankwaso says he is open to joining APC, insists on safeguards for supporters and Kano
The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, has clarified that he has not ruled out joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), explaining that his cautious stance is informed by past political experiences.
Mr. Kwankwaso made the clarification on Wednesday while addressing party leaders and supporters from Rano and Dawakin Tofa at his residence in Kano, noting that his earlier comments had been widely misunderstood.
“I didn’t say I won’t join the APC, but we must first be clearly assured of the future of the Kano State Government before we join the APC,” he said.
Raising concerns about the welfare of his political base, the former governor asked: “What will be the fate of our lawmakers and other supporters before we agree to defect?”
Mr. Kwankwaso recalled previous political alliances in which his political movement played decisive roles in forming governments, only to be sidelined afterwards.
He stressed that any decision to defect must be anchored on firm and explicit assurances that his supporters would be protected and that the existing structures of the Kano State Government would not be undermined.
The former governor further emphasised that no concrete guarantees had so far been offered to safeguard the interests of the Kwankwasiyya movement or to ensure fair treatment of its members under any prospective political arrangement.
“Without written assurances, abandoning the NNPP would be premature and risky,” he said.
Mr. Kwankwaso reiterated his commitment to defending the mandate and interests of his supporters, assuring them that no decision would be taken without extensive consultations and without clear benefits to the people.
