Alaafin Confers Okanlomo of Yorubaland Title on Seyi Tinubu
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has conferred the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Mr. Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.
The ceremony, held on Sunday in Oyo State, attracted dignitaries from across the country and beyond.
Mr. Tinubu arrived at the Alaafin’s palace accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Layal Tinubu, as well as associates and well-wishers.
At the event, the Alaafin also conferred a chieftaincy title on a former Governor of Zamfara State and serving senator, Sen. Abdul’Aziz Yari, who represents Zamfara West and chairs the Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation. He was installed as the Obaloyin of Yorubaland.
Explaining the significance of the titles, the Alaafin said Okanlomo of Yorubaland translates to “the beloved child” or “one dear to the hearts of all Yoruba people”.
The title is said to symbolise custodianship of Yoruba values, unity, cultural heritage, and ethical conduct.
Born on October 13, 1985, Mr. Tinubu is a lawyer and entrepreneur. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2013.
According to the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Bode Durojaiye, the titles represent love, compassion, justice, and a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.
Sen. Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State, was accompanied by a delegation of northern senators and political leaders.
Both titles carry responsibilities that include promoting Yoruba culture, advising the Alaafin, fostering unity, and advancing education and social welfare.
The ceremony drew a large gathering of dignitaries, including Senate President Sen. Godswill Akpabio; Sokoto State Governor, Mr. Ahmed Aliyu; former Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Benjamin Kalu; members of the Federal Executive Council; and traditional rulers from Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
Others in attendance were the Minister of Power, Mr. Bayo Adelabu; the Statistician-General of the Federation, Mr. Adeyemo Adeniran; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Olawale Edun; Sen. Teslim Folarin; and former Kano State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
