Dangote Refinery Defends Sacking of Workers, Cites Sabotage and Safety Concerns

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has explained that its recent reorganisation, which led to the dismissal of some staff, was undertaken to prevent repeated sabotage and improve operational efficiency.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company said the exercise was not arbitrary but necessary to address safety risks arising from “intermittent cases of sabotage in various units of the refinery, with dire consequences on human life and safety.”

It noted that while the refinery currently employs more than 3,000 Nigerians, only a “very small” number of staff were affected.

“We remain vigilant to our internal systems and vulnerabilities to ensure the long-term stability of this strategic national asset. It is imperative to protect the refinery for the benefit of Nigerians, our partners across Africa, and the thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on it,” the statement read.

The company added that it continues to recruit through graduate trainee programmes and experienced hire processes, while also upholding international labour standards, including workers’ right to unionise.

“The Dangote Petroleum Refinery exists to serve Nigerians, strengthen Africa’s energy independence, and create decent, sustainable jobs. We will continue to work with employees, regulators and stakeholders to maintain the highest standards of safety, transparency and accountability,” the management said.
