Senate Unseals Natasha Akpoti’s Office After Six-Month Suspension

The National Assembly has unsealed the office of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing.

The office was reopened on Tuesday by the Deputy Director of the Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji, potentially clearing the way for the Kogi Central lawmaker to return to plenary when sittings resume on 7 October 2025.

“To unseal Senator Natasha Akpoti’s office, I, Alabi Adedeji, Deputy Director, Sergeant-at-Arms, hereby unseal the office,” Mr Adedeji declared before unlocking the door, which had been sealed for six months.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months over alleged breaches of Senate standing rules, following the recommendation of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions. The suspension stripped her of aides, salaries, and office privileges.

Her punishment sparked widespread condemnation, especially from civil society organisations and opposition politicians. She later challenged the action in court but failed in her initial attempt to resume duties.

This month, she served out the suspension and formally notified the Senate of her intention to return. While acknowledging her letter, lawmakers maintained that no action would be taken until ongoing court proceedings are concluded.

“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the Senate stated.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has insisted that her suspension was linked to her petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim the Senate dismissed. She said she had already secured a favourable judgment in court.
