Youth Dominate Voter Registration as INEC Reports Strong Turnout
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recorded 4.44 million online registrations and 509,929 physical registrations in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
The figures were released on Monday in Abuja by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
Olumekun said that as of Sunday, 14 September, a total of 4,445,505 Nigerians had pre-registered online within four weeks of the exercise, which began on 18 August. Of this figure, 48.17 per cent (2,141,294) were male and 51.83 per cent (2,304,211) female.
He noted that 65.79 per cent (2,924,643) of registrants were between 18 and 34 years old, while students accounted for 25.02 per cent (1,112,344).
As of Friday, 12 September, combined online pre-registration and physical in-person registration stood at 509,929, with 45.06 per cent (229,758) male and 54.94 per cent (280,171) female. Young people aged 18–34 made up 74.15 per cent (378,132) of this group, while students accounted for 38.54 per cent (196,529).
Olumekun said detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability had been uploaded to INEC’s website and official platforms for public access.
He added that online voter pre-registration in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ended on Monday, 15 September. In the next two weeks, in-person registration will continue at designated centres before being devolved to all 62 wards in the FCT from 29 September to 8 October.
