One Dead, Four Rescued in Lagos Building Collapse

One person has been confirmed dead following the collapse of a three-storey building at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Friday night, with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirming the casualty in its Day Two incident report on Saturday. The agency said the body of a male victim was retrieved from the rubble during ongoing rescue operations.

Emergency teams from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other responders remain at the scene.

“So far, four persons have been rescued and are in stable condition,” NEMA announced. It added that while no further rescues had been made at the time of reporting, there were speculations that two additional victims might still be trapped.

Eyewitness accounts differ, with some claiming six persons were trapped and others saying five. Rescuers have so far pulled out four adult males alive, all of whom have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Authorities have cordoned off the site to facilitate rescue efforts, which are continuing into the night. Officials say every effort is being made to locate survivors and prevent further casualties.

The Yaba incident is the latest in a recurring pattern of building collapses across Lagos and other parts of Nigeria. Experts link such tragedies to poor construction practices, substandard materials, and weak regulatory enforcement. Data from the Lagos State Government and civil society groups indicate that dozens of such incidents occur annually, often leading to deaths, injuries, and displacement.
