Supreme Court Judgment: House of Assembly for Non-Implementation – Rivers Government

The Rivers State Government has accused the State House of Assembly of obstructing Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s efforts to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on the state’s political crisis.

Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, made this claim on Monday in response to comments by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Enemi Alabo-George, who had accused the governor of delaying the process.

Johnson stated that the Assembly had persistently refused to acknowledge official correspondences from the governor, despite multiple attempts to engage with them. He cited video evidence showing government representatives attempting to deliver official documents, which he alleged were deliberately ignored by the lawmakers.

He further disclosed that some of these correspondences had been published in national newspapers. Responding to Alabo-George’s challenge to provide acknowledgment copies of the letters, Johnson explained that the government could not produce them because the Assembly had refused to receive the documents in the first place.

Addressing the latest accusations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy, Johnson stated that the executive arm had yet to receive any formal communication from the Assembly. He reiterated Fubara’s commitment to peace, citing the governor’s compliance with a court ruling directing the transition of power from elected local government chairmen to Heads of Local Government Administration.

He added that the governor had also expressed his willingness to implement other directives from the Supreme Court as soon as he received the Certified True Copy of the judgment. However, Johnson accused the Assembly of responding with hostility by issuing ultimatums to the governor and the state electoral commission, describing these actions as a deliberate attempt to incite chaos.

Johnson also criticised the Assembly’s recent call for an investigation into the Chief Judge, arguing that their priorities did not align with the interests of the state. He asserted that from the outset, the lawmakers had acted in a self-serving manner rather than focusing on governance and the welfare of Rivers residents.
