NAFDAC Destroys ₦100bn Worth of Fake Drugs in Major Crackdown

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit drugs worth ₦100 billion at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.
NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the confiscated drugs were recovered from pharmaceutical drug marketers in Lagos’ Idumota market.
She emphasised that the agency’s action was necessary to prevent expired, fake, substandard, and falsified drugs from re-entering the market.
Speaking at the destruction exercise, Adeyeye, represented by NAFDAC’s Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Yedunni Adenuga, highlighted recent enforcement operations in Idumota, Onitsha, Ariara, and Ezeuku open drug markets.
“The presence of unregistered and banned products, such as Analgin and high-dose Tramadol, is alarming. These products contribute to insecurity and public health crises,” she said.
Adeyeye credited the success of the operation to security support from the National Security Adviser, who deployed over 1,000 personnel, including the military, police, and DSS.
Several suspects were apprehended, and investigations are ongoing, with sanctions awaiting those found culpable.
