Court Jails Ex-Acting Accountant-General Nwabuoku for 72 Years Over ₦868m Fraud

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has convicted and sentenced a former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to 72 years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Delivering judgement, Justice Omotosho held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had proved the nine-count money laundering charge against Mr. Nwabuoku beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the judge, “the defendant is hereby convicted as charged.”

Justice Omotosho found Mr. Nwabuoku guilty on all nine counts and sentenced him to eight years’ imprisonment on each count, bringing the total to 72 years. The court, however, ordered that the sentences run concurrently.

The judge described Mr. Nwabuoku’s actions—diverting funds meant for security and defence while serving as Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence—as “appalling,” and commended the EFCC for its thorough prosecution.

He further observed that the testimony of the ninth prosecution witness, which established that Mr. Nwabuoku voluntarily refunded over ₦200 million during the investigation, was not challenged by the defence.

Mr. Nwabuoku was arraigned on 15 January 2025 on a nine-count amended charge. He was granted bail in the sum of ₦500 million, with two sureties in like sum.

The offences were said to have been committed between 2019 and 2021 while he served as Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence.
