APC Takes Bwari and AMAC as PDP Wins Gwagwalada in FCT Chairmanship Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared winners in three Area Council chairmanship elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with the All Progressives Congress (APC) securing victories in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched Gwagwalada.
In Bwari, the Returning Officer, Prof. Mohammed Nurudeen, declared Mr. Joshua Ishaku of the APC winner after he polled 18,466 votes in the election held on Feb. 21, 2026.
“I am the Returning Officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council Bwari chairmanship election held on Feb. 21, 2026. That Joshua Ishaku, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Nurudeen said on Sunday.
He disclosed that the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 4,254 votes, while the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) secured 3,515 votes to place second and third respectively.
The election was conducted across 10 wards: Igu, Shere, Dutse, Ushafa, Byazhin, Kuduru, Kubwa, Usuma, Bwari Central, and Kawu.
In AMAC, the Collation Officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, returned Mr. Christopher Maikalangu of the APC elected after he polled 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast.
“That Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Abue said.
According to him, the ADC scored 12,109 votes, while the PDP secured 3,398 votes.
Abue disclosed that rejected votes stood at 2,336, total valid votes at 62,861, and total votes cast at 65,197. He added that 837,338 voters were registered, while 65,676 were accredited.
Other candidates and their scores included: Agbon Vaniah (Accord) – 403; Nemiebika Tamunomiesam (Action Alliance) – 108; Richard Elizabeth (ADP) – 588; Eze Chukwu (APGA) – 1,111; Chukwu Promise (APM) – 122; Ugoh Michael (APP) – 32; Thomas Happiness (Boot Party) – 43; Jibrin Alhassan (NNPP) – 1,694; Samson Usani (NRM) – 73; Dantani Zanda (PDP) – 3,398; Iber Shimakaha (PRP) – 90; Simon Obinna (SDP) – 2,185; Madaki Robert (YPP) – 421; and Swani Buba (ZLP) – 189.
Speaking after the announcement, the APC Collation Agent, Mr. Gambo Babale, described the election and collation process as credible.
“INEC has done so well. We’ve seen the processes across all the polling units, the ward collation centres, and here at the AMAC area council collation centre. Everything was done perfectly well,” he said.
The YPP Ward Collation Agent, Mr. Abdullahi Ibrahim, also described the process as transparent and congratulated the winner.
In Gwagwalada, the Returning Officer, Prof. Philip Akpeni, declared Mr. Mohammed Kasim of the PDP winner after he polled 22,165 votes.
“I am the Returning Officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council Gwagwalada chairmanship election held on Feb. 21, 2026. That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Akpeni said.
He disclosed that the APC candidate, Mr. Yahaya Usman, scored 17,788 votes, while Mr. Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) secured 1,687 votes to place third.
The election in Gwagwalada was conducted across 10 wards: Paiko, Dobi, Gwako, Ibwa, Staff Quarters, Zuba, Ikwa, Kutunku, Gwagwalada Centre, and Tunga Maje.
