President Bola Tinubu on Sunday met General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), alongside senior American and Nigerian security officials at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in a move that underscored the continuing defence and security cooperation between both countries.

The AFRICOM delegation’s visit highlighted ongoing collaboration on strategic security matters at a time when Nigeria faces persistent threats from terrorism and broader regional instability.

In attendance were Nigeria’s top security chiefs, including the National Security Adviser, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.); the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu.

Also present were the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mr. Mohammed Mohammed; the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Ajayi; and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Uandiandeye.

The American delegation included the United States Charge d’Affaires in Nigeria, Mr. Keith Heffern; AFRICOM’s Senior Foreign Policy Adviser, Ambassador Peter Vrooman; and the Command Senior Enlisted Leader of AFRICOM, Command Sergeant Major Garric M. Banfield.

Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, the meeting comes amid strengthening security ties between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in support of Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations in the North-East and North-West, as well as wider efforts to promote stability across West Africa.
