Tears in Kaiama as VP Promises Troops, Relief, and Tinubu’s Full Backing After Massacre
Vice President Sen. Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s determination to restore peace in Nuku and Woro villages in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, following Tuesday’s deadly attacks by terrorists.
According to a statement by his media aide, Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President told residents that the President had ordered the deployment of a battalion of the Nigerian Army to Kaiama, adding that all hands were on deck to rid the affected communities — and the state at large — of insecurity.
Mr. Shettima gave the assurance on Saturday when he led a Federal Government delegation to commiserate with the people of Kaiama and Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, over the attack, which claimed several lives.
He also disclosed that President Tinubu had directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in partnership with the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency, to mobilise resources to provide relief and support to the distressed communities.
“Your Excellency, we are here at the behest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to commiserate with you and the good people of Kaiama and Kwara State, by extension, over the tragedy that befell our communities of Woro and Nuku on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026,” he said.
“The tragic killings shocked Nigerians because the victims were peaceful members of the communities who were dedicated to building their livelihoods while practising their religion in a peaceful and harmonious manner.”
He conveyed what he described as the heartfelt condolences of the President and the Federal Government to families of the victims.
“Please accept our heartfelt condolences on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. A battalion of the Nigerian Army has been deployed to Kaiama, and all hands are on deck to ensure that peace and tranquillity are restored,” he said.
The Vice President declined to disclose detailed security measures, noting that such matters are sensitive.
“Security issues are sensitive issues and we do not have to divulge most of the actions being taken by our security establishment. But I’m here fundamentally to commiserate with the government and people of Kwara, and the people of Kaiama in particular, over the tragic loss of lives, and to reassure you of our empathy and support,” he added.
Earlier, Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Chairman of the North-East Governors’ Forum, also conveyed the forum’s condolences.
“As Muslims, we believe in destiny, and it is our sincere hope that, by God’s grace, this act will not happen again. May Almighty Allah forgive those who have lost their lives and grant them Aljannah Firdaus,” he prayed.
Responding, Gov. AbdulRazaq commended the Federal Government’s swift response.
“As confirmed by the Local Government Chairman, troops are already on the ground and Operation Savannah Shield is in motion. We were received at the airport by the General Officer Commanding, Second Division, of the Nigerian Army. A DIG is also on the ground. Representatives of NEMA have been present since the incident,” he said.
He called for continued prayers for improved security nationwide.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar Danladi, thanked the President and Vice President for the immediate deployment of troops, while the Emir of Kaiama, HRH Alhaji Mu’azu Shehu Omar, praised the prompt intervention.
“We really appreciate the effort of President Tinubu. Since the incident happened on Tuesday, he has shown concern towards us. Security personnel and other relevant agencies are adequately deployed to stabilise the situation,” the monarch said.
Other dignitaries present included the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar; Sen. Ali Mohammed Ndume; the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Ltd., Eng. Jennifer Adighije; former Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege; and members of the Kwara State House of Assembly.
Gunmen attacked Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities on Tuesday, killing at least 75 people, razing shops, and burning a traditional ruler’s residence, forcing residents to flee.
