Again, National Grid Collapses as Power Supply Falls to Zero

Nigeria’s national electricity grid on Tuesday suffered its second collapse of 2026, plunging power supply to zero across the country.

Data available at the time of filing this report showed that electricity generation had fallen to zero megawatts, with no power supplied to any of the 11 electricity distribution companies nationwide.

The latest incident comes barely days after the grid’s first collapse of the year last Friday and weeks after a similar failure on December 29, 2025, which triggered widespread power outages across the country.

Electricity generation reportedly dropped sharply from more than 4,500 megawatts to as low as zero megawatts by 11:00 a.m. Checks indicated that all 23 power generation plants connected to the national grid lost output during the incident, resulting in zero power allocation to each of the 11 distribution companies.

Grid collapses are commonly attributed to a combination of technical faults, inadequate maintenance of transmission lines, and fluctuations in generation capacity. However, the precise cause of Tuesday’s collapse could not be immediately determined.

As of the time of filing this report, officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria had yet to issue a detailed statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
