Malami Gets ₦500m Bail as Court Sets February 17 for Corruption Trial
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has granted the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, bail in the sum of ₦500 million, alongside two other defendants.
The judge ruled that the bail must be secured with two sureties who own landed property in Abuja’s highbrow districts of Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa.
Justice Nwite further ordered that the sureties must deposit their travel documents with the court and submit documents relating to their properties for verification by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court. The sureties are also required to depose to affidavits of means.
Mr. Malami was equally directed to deposit his travel documents with the court and was restrained from travelling out of the country without prior permission of the court. In addition, both the former Attorney-General and his sureties were ordered to submit two recent passport photographs to the court.
Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, Justice Nwite ordered that Mr. Malami be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The court subsequently fixed February 17 for the commencement of trial in the corruption case.
The same bail conditions were extended to Mr. Malami, his son, Abdulaziz Malami, and an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, Hajia Asabe Bashir.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering against Mr. Malami, his son, and his wife.
