Reps Release Certified Tax Acts to End Discrepancy Controversy
The House of Representatives has released certified copies of four new tax Acts, aiming to quell public concern over alleged discrepancies and unauthorised versions of the laws.
The move follows allegations raised on the floor of the House by Mr. Abdulsamad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto), who warned that inconsistencies between the Bills passed by the National Assembly and the versions later gazetted could undermine legislative integrity.
In response, the Speaker, Mr. Tajudeen Abbas, in concert with the Senate President, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, directed the immediate release of the Certified True Copies (CTCs). These include the endorsement and assent pages signed by President Bola Tinubu.
Mr. Abbas also constituted a seven-member ad hoc committee, chaired by Mr. Aliyu Betara, to investigate the alleged alterations and how unauthorised versions came into circulation. Members include Mr. Idris Wase, Mr. Sada Soli, Mr. Adedeji Faleke, Mr. Igariwey Iduma, Mr. Fred Agbedi, and Mr. Babajimi Benson.
The four Acts are the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025; the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025; the National Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025; and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act, 2025. The House described them as the backbone of Nigeria’s contemporary tax reform framework, designed to modernise revenue administration and strengthen fiscal coordination.
In a statement by the House spokesperson, Mr. Akin Rotimi, the legislature reassured the public of the laws’ authenticity. “The National Assembly is an institution built on records, procedure, and institutional memory,” he stated, emphasising that only the certified copies released by the Assembly are authentic. The public was urged to disregard any other documents in circulation.
