Rivers PDP Crisis: Fubara Ally Defects as Wike Consolidates Control

Dr. Nname Ewor, the factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, has dissolved his faction into the Aaron Chukwemeka-led caretaker committee, which is backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike.

Dr. Ewor, who was previously aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, announced the dissolution on Friday during Mr. Wike’s “thank you” visit to Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area (LGA).

“Today, I am handing over the chairmanship and leadership of my faction to the Aaron Chukwemeka-led caretaker committee. The PDP is no longer factionalised in Rivers State,” Dr. Ewor said, while praising Mr. Wike’s leadership.

He explained that he withdrew his loyalty from Governor Fubara because, in his view, the governor could not be trusted.

Dr. Ewor alleged that President Bola Tinubu had intervened twice in an effort to resolve the political crisis in the state, but accused Governor Fubara of failing to honour the agreements reached during the mediation.

“If the President mediated twice, that means you cannot be trusted. Can such a leader be trusted? We can’t trust him,” he said, dismissing claims that Mr. Wike intimidated him or his leadership.

Earlier, the Chairman of ONELGA Local Government Area, Mr. Chukwu Ogbogu, thanked Mr. Wike for what he described as his numerous development interventions and personal support during his tenure as governor, noting that many indigenes of the area benefitted from state and federal appointments.

Mrs. Nkemjika Ezekwe, who represents ONELGA II State Constituency, described Mr. Wike as a “women empowerment advocate,” saying he gave women in Rivers State a voice and financial independence. She pledged her continued solidarity with the minister.

Also speaking, Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, described Mr. Wike as a “divine project” and commended his efforts at building bridges across Rivers State.

In his remarks, Mr. Wike praised the people of ONELGA for their unity and resilience, describing the local government area as a “no-go area” for supporters of Governor Fubara. He emphasised their commitment to supporting President Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Family initiative.

“We are not talking about party politics in Rivers State, but the Renewed Hope Family for Tinubu, and we will do all we can to give him the needed support,” Mr. Wike said.
