El-Rufai Held Overnight Again as EFCC Deepens Fraud Probe
The former Governor of Kaduna State, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai, will spend a second night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at its headquarters in Abuja.
Mr. El-Rufai presented himself for questioning on Monday at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja over allegations of corruption. He was subsequently held in custody by interrogators of the anti-graft agency.
The former governor is being questioned over alleged fraud during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
A source within the EFCC told NAN on Tuesday that El-Rufai would remain in custody.
“As I am talking to you now, the former governor is still with our interrogators and will be spending the night with them,” the source said.
According to the source, the agency would conduct a diligent investigation into the allegations levelled against him.
“I can assure you that the EFCC will do its job professionally by attending to all issues raised against him,” the source added.
The official, who could not confirm when El-Rufai would be released or charged to court, said that would depend on the progress of investigations.
Mr. Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai’s media aide, also confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the former governor honoured the commission’s invitation and held discussions with its officials.
According to Adekeye, El-Rufai had a frank and fruitful interaction with EFCC investigators, while his legal team described the officials’ conduct as professional.
He added that the former governor remained with the commission after Monday’s engagement.
