Electoral Act Amendment: Senate Sets Up Ad Hoc Committee to Finalise Bill
The Senate has yet to conclude work on the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Enactment) Bill and has constituted an ad hoc committee to harmonise and distil the views of lawmakers on the proposed legislation.
President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, announced the decision on Thursday after a closed session of the upper chamber.
Lawmakers had, during the executive session, commenced consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, chaired by Sen. Simon Lalong. The closed session was convened to allow senators to thoroughly examine the proposed amendments and supporting documents ahead of further legislative debate.
Announcing the formation of the committee, Sen. Akpabio said it would collate and refine the opinions of senators for final deliberation.
“The Senate has set up a small committee to further make contributions, galvanise, and distil all the opinions of distinguished senators and present them to us for final deliberation on Tuesday,” he said.
According to him, Sen. Niyi Adegbonmire will serve as chairman of the committee, while members include Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye, and Titus Zam.
“The committee has 48 hours, or at most three days, within which to conclude its assignment and report back to the Senate before our next plenary, scheduled for Tuesday. The Clerk of the Senate will serve as secretary of the committee,” Sen. Akpabio added.
