Deposed Venezuelan Leader Maduro Faces New York Court on Narcoterrorism Charges
Venezuela’s deposed president, Mr. Nicolás Maduro, is scheduled to appear before a federal judge in New York at noon on Monday to be formally notified of the charges against him. He and his wife, Mrs. Cilia Flores, were seized by U.S. forces during a pre-dawn raid in Caracas on Saturday and flown to New York to face charges of “narcoterrorism”, related to the alleged trafficking of tons of cocaine into the United States.
The operation has triggered significant international concern. Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Spain issued a joint statement on Sunday expressing their “rejection” of Mr. Maduro’s ousting and “concern about any attempt at governmental control or administration or outside appropriation of natural or strategic resources.”
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump, who authorised the raid, suggested Washington would “run” Venezuela. In a telephone interview with The Atlantic on Sunday, he stated, “rebuilding there and regime change — anything you want to call it — is better than what you have right now.” He described Venezuela as “a totally failed country.”
President Trump also issued a warning to Mr. Maduro’s successor, the newly confirmed interim president, Mrs. Delcy Rodríguez. “If she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro,” he said. His administration stated it was willing to work with the rest of the government if U.S. goals, including access to Venezuelan oil reserves, are met.
Mrs. Rodríguez, confirmed by Venezuela’s Supreme Court and military, struck a defiant note on Saturday, asserting Mr. Maduro was the country’s sole legitimate leader and vowing, “we’re ready to defend our natural resources.”
