The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the accident that claimed the lives of two associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Mr. Anthony Joshua, is currently in custody.
The crash occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while the driver was conveying Mr. Joshua and two of his friends, Mr. Latif Ayodele and Mr. Sina Ghami.
The Lexus SUV reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Mr. Ayodele and Mr. Ghami at the scene. Mr. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Thursday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Oluseyi Babaseyi, said investigations were ongoing to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the accident, as well as the driver’s role.
“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Mr. Babaseyi said.
Mr. Joshua was discharged from hospital late on Wednesday after being certified clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
The former world heavyweight champion, accompanied by his mother, reportedly visited a funeral home in Lagos on Thursday to pay their last respects to Mr. Ayodele and Mr. Ghami, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later that night.
