Tragedy on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway as Anthony Joshua survives crash that claims two lives
World-renowned boxer, Mr. Anthony Joshua, was on Monday involved in a road traffic accident at the Makun area of Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which is beloved to have claimed the lives of two others.
It was learnt that the vehicle conveying the boxer, a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck. The accident reportedly occurred before the Danco Filling Station on the expressway.
Confirming the crash, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, alongside the FRSC spokesperson, Mr. Afolabi Odunsi, said investigations were ongoing and that further details would be communicated in due course.
Confirming the incident, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Mr. Afolabi Odunsi, said that Mr. Joshua survived the crash, while two occupants of the vehicle died.
“Joshua is alive, while two people died,” Mr. Odunsi said, adding that further details of the accident would be communicated later.
Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred at about 11:00 a.m., just before the Danco Filling Station at Makun, inward the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan axis of the expressway.
According to them, Mr. Joshua was travelling in the Lexus SUV, which was part of a two-vehicle convoy. The second vehicle, a Pajero SUV, was reportedly conveying his security detail. The Lexus was said to have rammed into a stationary truck under circumstances that have yet to be fully ascertained.
An eyewitness disclosed that there were four occupants in the Lexus at the time of the accident, with Mr. Joshua seated behind the driver. While the boxer reportedly sustained minor injuries, two other occupants of the vehicle were said to have died on the spot.
“It was a serious crash. Joshua was sitting behind the driver, with another passenger beside him, while one person was also seated beside the driver. His security team was in the vehicle behind. Immediately after the accident, we mobilised to rescue the victims and flagged down vehicles for help before FRSC officials arrived,” the eyewitness said.
