Tinubu Unfazed by Trump’s Military Threat, Says Information Minister

President Bola Tinubu remains calm despite threats by former United States President Donald Trump over Nigeria’s security situation, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, has said.

Speaking to journalists after meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Idris said Tinubu remains focused on making Nigeria safer for all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or creed.

“Mr. President is calm. He is examining the entire situation and considering ways to ensure that the international community understands the progress we have made,” the minister stated.

He noted that Tinubu recently overhauled the leadership of the armed forces as part of efforts to strengthen national security.

“Only a few weeks ago, in his determination to revitalise the nation’s security architecture, the President appointed a new Chief of Defence Staff and other service chiefs. This shows that he has been working tirelessly to make Nigeria a safer country for everyone,” Idris said.

He added that the government had opened communication channels with international partners to ensure a clearer understanding of Nigeria’s security actions and intentions.

“We are addressing all the issues and will not overheat the polity. The government continues to engage religious leaders and reassure the world that Nigeria does not support violence against any faith,” he said.

Idris dismissed claims that the Nigerian government was favouring one religion over another, insisting that extremists were behind the false narrative.

“Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. There has been no government policy or action that discriminates against any faith. What we face are criminal elements attempting to divide the country. Nigerians must resist such efforts and remain united,” he said.

He called on citizens to prioritise unity and nation-building over division and politics.

“This is a time for reflection and solidarity, not rhetoric. Mr. President is calm but deeply engaged. Relevant authorities are handling these matters responsibly and thoroughly,” Idris concluded.

Trump had, in a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, said he had asked the Pentagon to “map out a possible plan of attack” on Nigeria, claiming Christianity was facing “an existential threat” in Africa’s most populous country.

He wrote that if Nigeria failed to “stem the killings,” the United States would attack and “it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians.”

The remarks, which Trump repeated aboard Air Force One on Sunday, have sparked global diplomatic reactions.
