INEC Confirms 2.8 Million Voters for Anambra Election, Reaffirms Stance Against Vote-Buying
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved a final register of 2,802,790 eligible voters for the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced this on Monday during the signing of the Peace Accord for the off-cycle election, organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC) in Awka.
Prof. Amupitan said the commission had finalised deployment plans for 24,000 personnel and election materials across 5,718 polling units, 326 ward collation centres, and 21 local government and state collation centres in Awka.
He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to curbing vote-buying, warning that anyone attempting to subvert the will of the people would face the full force of the law.
“The Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) has instituted robust security measures for this election,” he said.
“The Nigeria Police Force will deploy 45,000 personnel, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps will deploy 10,250 officers, alongside other security agencies.”
The INEC chairman assured voters of improved logistics and enhanced result management during the election.
He urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to uphold the principles of the Peace Accord, stressing that peace is essential to a credible poll.
“It is not the signatures on this document that guarantee peace; it is the genuine commitment to honouring its provisions,” he said.
“Without peace, logistics will be disrupted, our personnel and materials will be at risk, and ultimately, the credibility of the process will be undermined.”
Prof. Amupitan described the Peace Accord as a collective reaffirmation of stakeholders’ commitment to non-violence and mutual respect throughout the electoral process.
“By embracing the accord, stakeholders are sending a powerful message that democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, tolerance, and unity of purpose,” he said.
“Let us ensure that the forthcoming election is remembered, not for division or discord, but for unity and shared purpose.”
He commended traditional, religious, and community leaders, as well as civil society groups and the media, for supporting the drive towards peaceful and credible elections.
“By God’s grace, the 2025 Anambra Governorship Election will be peaceful and successful,” he concluded.
Prof. Amupitan also lauded the National Peace Committee for its continued commitment to promoting harmony and stability in Nigeria’s electoral process.
