Sanwo-Olu: Lagos Tenancy Bill Will Safeguard Rights of Landlords and Tenants
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says the proposed Lagos Tenancy Bill seeks to balance the interests of landlords and tenants while resolving housing disputes.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Sunny Ajose Housing Estate in Ajara, Badagry, Sanwo-Olu said the bill, now before the Lagos State House of Assembly, would modernise tenancy laws and promote fairness in the rental market.
He explained that the legislation was developed in collaboration with the Assembly to ensure a transparent and equitable rental system.
“Everyone wants to be a landlord,” the governor said. “But tenants must also be able to live decently and pay rent sustainably.”
Sanwo-Olu said the bill aimed to curb exploitative practices, reduce conflicts, and streamline tenancy agreements. It would also strengthen existing housing initiatives such as rent-to-own and rent-to-live schemes, helping more Lagosians transition into home ownership.
“Our goal is to make housing affordable, accessible, and sustainable for every resident,” he added, noting that the reforms align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He reaffirmed that the state would continue partnering with the private sector and communities to deliver inclusive housing solutions.
