NRC Suspends Abuja–Kaduna Train Service After Derailment

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train services on the Abuja–Kaduna route until further notice following a derailment on the line.

The NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this to journalists in Abuja shortly after the incident. He said technical staff from the corporation, in collaboration with the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and other relevant agencies, were already at the site conducting investigations.

Opeifa dismissed claims that the trains were poorly maintained, adding that refunds had been initiated for all affected passengers. He also visited some of the passengers at Asham Station and the Idu train station in Abuja.

According to him, six passengers sustained minor injuries and have been treated. However, the exact number of passengers on board has yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, the NSIB has launched a probe into the incident. Its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Oladeji, confirmed that six passengers were injured, with no fatalities recorded.

The Bureau has dispatched an investigative team to gather evidence, liaise with stakeholders, and determine the cause of the derailment.

NSIB Director General, Alex Badeh Jr., expressed sympathy for those affected. “We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. Our investigators are on the ground to uncover the root cause of this derailment. The Bureau remains committed to ensuring safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation,” he said.
