Manufacturers Urge Renewed Push for ‘Nigeria First’ Policy

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has called for renewed commitment to the ‘Nigeria First Policy’ to boost local production, competitiveness, and sustainable development.

Speaking at the 58th Annual General Meeting of MAN’s Ikeja branch in Lagos, President Otunba Francis Meshioye said the policy—modelled after America’s ‘America First’ approach—prioritises national interest in economic decision-making.

“The manufacturing sector is central to Nigeria’s economic growth and must be prioritised in policy implementation. We are working tirelessly to institutionalise the Nigeria First Policy and advance sustainable development,” Meshioye said.

He urged the Lagos State Government to reconsider its ban on single-use plastics, noting that many manufacturers had invested in recycling technology. He argued that emphasis should be on circular economy practices and waste management rather than outright prohibition.

Meshioye also appealed for streamlined regulations, constructive dialogue, and protection for manufacturers from harassment by non-state actors.

Ikeja Branch Chairman, Robert Ugbaja, emphasised that the Nigeria First Policy must be treated as a national strategy requiring strong institutions, collective effort, and decisive leadership.

He urged manufacturers to remain solution-driven and ambitious while leading the charge for industrial growth.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, reaffirmed the state’s support.

“Nigeria stands at a crossroads. The Nigeria First Policy challenges us to prioritise local production and empower indigenous enterprises,” he said.

NESG Chairman, Olaniyi Yusuf, warned that nations failing to strengthen local production risked becoming dumping grounds for foreign goods.

The AGM also produced a new Ikeja branch chairman, Mr Thomas Osubu.
