From 38% to 63%: WAEC Admits Marking Error, Updates WASSCE Scores
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued corrected results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) following an error in the marking process.
Head of the National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, told a press conference on Friday that an internal review revealed that a wrong serialised code file was used in printing the English Language Objective Paper, resulting in the application of incorrect marking keys.
The error, which did not affect schools using the computer-based mode, contributed to a sharp drop in performance initially reported.
According to the revised figures, 1,239,884 candidates (62.96%) obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics, compared to the previously announced 38.32%. Overall, 1,794,821 candidates (91.14%) secured credits in five subjects with or without English and Mathematics.
However, the results of 191,053 candidates (9.7%) remain withheld over allegations of examination malpractice.
Dr Dangut apologised for the error, acknowledging the distress caused to candidates, parents, teachers, and stakeholders, and assured the public that measures were being taken to prevent a recurrence.
He urged candidates to recheck their results on www.waecdirect.org and apply for their digital certificates after 48 hours. He also appealed to state governments owing WAEC to clear their debts so that withheld results could be released.
WAEC had released the original results on 4 August for 1,969,313 candidates in Nigeria, Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea.
