President Bola Tinubu has announced a reward of $100,000 and a flat for each member of Nigeria’s national female basketball team, D’Tigress, following their recent victory at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

Represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at a reception held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu also conferred national honours on the players, coach, and technical crew.

“Each player will receive $100,000; the coach and technical team will receive $50,000. This is how we honour excellence,” Shettima said.

He praised the team for their outstanding performance and resilience, describing their fifth consecutive continental title as a powerful symbol of national unity and excellence.

“You conquered Africa with a 78–64 victory, showcasing not just skill, but remarkable determination. You’ve not only brought home a trophy but valuable lessons in teamwork and patriotism,” he said.

Tinubu hailed Head Coach Rena Wakama for her leadership, noting that her achievements had inspired countless young Nigerian girls.

“To Amy Okonkwo, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and Ezinne Kalu, the final’s top scorer, your brilliance lifted the entire team,” he added.

Highlighting the broader achievements of Nigerian women in sports—from the Super Falcons to Olympic medallists—Tinubu said women had consistently brought honour to the nation.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to repositioning sports as a key pillar of national development, citing its role in employment, diplomacy, and youth empowerment.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also addressed the team, praising their victory as a beacon of inspiration for young girls across Nigeria.

“Your win is a statement of hard work, excellence, and national pride. It proves that Nigerian women continue to break barriers and set new records,” she said.
