From Governor to Monarch? Olubadan-In-Council Picks Ladoja

The Olubadan-In-Council has unanimously endorsed former Oyo State governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The endorsement took place at the new Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on 7 July 2025.

As Otun Olubadan—the highest-ranking chief in the civil line—Ladoja is next in line for the throne under Ibadan’s unique rotational chieftaincy system.

Announcing the decision, the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, said the Council would forward Ladoja’s name to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for formal approval and subsequent installation.

“The Council is confident that Senator Ladoja will bring a wealth of experience and wisdom to the throne. His service as a former governor and his deep ties to Ibadan make him an ideal leader to steer the city into a new era,” Ajibola stated.

He expressed hope that Ladoja’s reign would usher in a period of unity and development, noting, “We believe he will uphold the values of our ancestors while embracing the demands of modern governance.”

Born on 25 September 1944 in Gambari village near Ibadan, Ladoja attended Ibadan Boys’ High School and Olivet Baptist High School. He later earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Liège, Belgium.

Upon returning to Nigeria, Ladoja began his career with Total Nigeria before venturing into business and politics. He was elected Governor of Oyo State in May 2003 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His tenure was interrupted by a controversial impeachment in January 2006, but he was reinstated by the Supreme Court in December 2006 and completed his term in May 2007.

In August 2024, Ladoja accepted the ceremonial beaded crown as Otun Olubadan, a prerequisite for ascending the Olubadan throne under the revised chieftaincy declaration.

Speaking on a private radio programme in Ibadan, he had said, “By the grace of God, I will become Olubadan. My blood pressure has been stable. Whoever God has destined to become Olubadan will surely become Olubadan.”

A formal public presentation is expected to take place in the coming weeks, pending the governor’s approval.
