Sanwo-Olu Swears in 57 Lagos Council Leaders, Urges Grassroots Accountability
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Sunday swore in the newly elected Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of the 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Sports Ground of Lagos House, Ikeja, the governor urged the council leaders to deliver inclusive, accountable governance and quality leadership at the grassroots.
“This is not the time for politics,” Sanwo-Olu said. “You have been called to serve. Govern with empathy and equity, irrespective of who voted for you. You are the closest tier of government to the people.”
He emphasised the need to uphold public trust, use the autonomy granted to councils responsibly, and align with the state’s THEMES+ development agenda.
Sanwo-Olu assured that the state government would continue to support and train the new leaders to enhance their capacity and effectiveness. He also advised them to carefully select competent and people-oriented individuals for their cabinets.
“Your emergence is a call to duty,” the governor said. “Be deliberate about service delivery and prove to Lagosians that they made the right choice.”
Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Robert, said the election outcomes reflected the public’s trust in the new officials and a commitment to strengthening democracy at the grassroots.
Speaking on behalf of the new leaders, Ibeju-Lekki LGA Chairman, Mr. Sesan Olowa, thanked the electorate and the governor for the opportunity, promising to deliver effective grassroots governance.
The ceremony was attended by party leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and residents.
