Lagos Faces Intermittent Blackouts as TCN Begins 25-Day Maintenance

Residents of Lagos State are set to experience intermittent power outages as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) commences a 25-day maintenance exercise on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.

In a statement issued by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the TCN disclosed that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the National Independent System Operator (NISO) had approved the infrastructure upgrade.

The project, scheduled from 28 July to 21 August 2025, will involve the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cables on the transmission line. Maintenance will be carried out daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“Power will be restored through the line after each day’s work, and all other circuits will remain active to ensure stable supply to the Lagos complex during the exercise,” the company said.

The upgrade is expected to facilitate full operationalisation of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, enabling improved real-time monitoring and management of the national grid.

Electricity distribution companies in Lagos — the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and Ikeja Electric — have also issued public notices alerting customers to the expected disruptions.

In its notice, Ikeja Electric stated: “From Monday, 28 July to Thursday, 21 August, 2025, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, customers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding due to scheduled TCN maintenance.”

Similarly, EKEDC informed customers across its network that a “planned outage” would occur throughout the maintenance period, leading to load shedding and temporary disruptions in power supply.
