APC NEC Meeting Moved to Villa as Governors Debate New Chairman
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced a change in the venue for its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, 24 July 2025.
Originally slated to hold at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the meeting will now take place at 2:00 p.m. in the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa. The change was confirmed on Wednesday by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, who attributed the decision to logistical reasons.
In preparation for the NEC session, governors elected under the APC held a closed-door meeting on Wednesday at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. The gathering was hosted by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who also chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum.
Among the governors in attendance were Babagana Zulum (Borno), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Usman Ododo (Kogi), and Uba Sani (Kaduna).
While the official agenda of the meeting was not disclosed, party insiders suggest that high on the list of priorities is the selection of a new National Chairman following the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje in June. Ganduje stepped down citing health concerns, leaving a leadership vacuum at a time when the party is preparing for by-elections in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states.
Acting National Chairman Ali Bukar Dalori is expected to present updates on several critical issues, including the ratification of congress schedules, constitution of standing committees, and progress on the party’s nationwide e-registration initiative.
A key point of internal debate remains the zoning of the national chairmanship. While some stakeholders argue that the position should remain in the North-West—Ganduje’s geopolitical zone—others are advocating for its return to the North-Central region, where it was originally zoned prior to adjustments made in 2022. Proponents of this shift argue that reverting to the North-Central would promote fairness and internal party balance.
The outcome of the NEC meeting is expected to shape the APC’s direction and cohesion as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
