Nigerian Banks Restore Dollar Access on Naira Cards After FX Relief
Several Nigerian banks have resumed allowing international transactions on Naira-denominated debit cards, a development attributed to improved foreign exchange (FX) liquidity.
Until recently, only Providus Bank allowed limited dollar transactions for its premium clients using Naira cards. However, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), United Bank for Africa (UBA), Wema Bank, and Stanbic IBTC have now reinstated access for wider customer segments.
In a notice to customers, GTBank announced a quarterly spending limit of $1,000 for international use, including $500 for ATM withdrawals and up to $1,000 for online and point-of-sale (POS) transactions abroad.
“This limit applies across all international transactions—including online shopping, overseas POS payments, and ATM withdrawals,” the bank explained.
UBA also re-enabled global access for its premium cardholders, stating: “All UBA Premium Naira Cards—Gold, Platinum, and World variants—are now active for international use, offering greater flexibility for global payments and online transactions.”
Similarly, Wema Bank notified customers that its Naira Mastercard now supports dollar payments on global platforms such as Amazon, AliExpress, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube.
The resumption follows months of restrictions imposed during periods of acute FX shortages. Analysts say the policy shift signals growing confidence in Nigeria’s exchange rate reforms and increased dollar inflows.
