“Only One Town Left”: Zulum Raises Alarm Over Borno’s Last Stand in Marte
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has called on the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive action to prevent Marte from falling again to Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.
Zulum, who coordinated logistics alongside security forces late into Saturday night, visited Marte to assess security challenges and explore long-term stabilisation strategies.
Prior to his visit, the town had been deserted following a Boko Haram assault on Friday, with over 20,000 residents fleeing to Dikwa for safety.
Addressing journalists on Sunday, the governor said his presence aimed to strengthen community resilience and show continued support for security personnel.
“Marte was resettled four years ago, but sadly, it was ransacked again in the past three days. About 20,000 people fled to Dikwa,” Zulum said.
“This displacement poses a serious threat—many of the displaced youths risk being recruited by insurgents if left in camps for too long.”
He added that he and his team returned to Marte on Saturday and spent the night there with the support of the Nigerian Army and civilian volunteers.
“Marte Local Government used to comprise over 300 communities. Today, only one town remains. If we lose this final settlement, the entire LGA may fall to insurgents. We must not allow this to happen,” he said.
Zulum appealed to the federal authorities and military high command to consolidate their hold on the town.
“I urge the Federal Government and Nigerian Army to redouble efforts to retain this strategic location. We cannot afford to cede any further ground.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting security agencies in restoring peace across the state.
“As governor, I will continue to support our gallant military in every way possible to achieve lasting peace in Borno,” Zulum stated.
