Unity Torch: Ogun Gears Up to Host National Sports Festival

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday received the Unity Torch, signalling the state’s readiness to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024.

The Torch was handed to the governor by renowned badminton player Dorcas Adesokan — a double gold medallist at the 2014 African Youth Games — at the City Gate along the Abeokuta–Siun–Sagamu Expressway.

Speaking at the ceremony, Abiodun said the Torch, which had toured all states of the federation since it was handed over by President Bola Tinubu to the National Sports Commission, represents the collective hopes of Nigerians.

“The Unity Torch, which began its journey across the country in March, symbolises far more than the upcoming Games. It embodies our shared aspiration for a united Nigeria — one where diversity strengthens us and where young people are empowered to excel on the global stage,” he said.

According to the governor, the Torch reflects Ogun State’s commitment to celebrating Nigeria’s sporting legacy and promoting peace, unity, and resilience through sport.

He added that the National Sports Festival, established in 1973, was conceived to foster collaboration, national cohesion, and respect across ethnic and regional divides.

“Hosting this prestigious event for the second time, Ogun State is humbled and honoured to receive the Torch of Unity. We are prepared to showcase our vibrant culture, renowned hospitality, and the exceptional talents of our athletes,” he stated.

Governor Abiodun expressed hope that the Torch would ignite love and unity among Nigerian youth and serve as a rallying symbol for national harmony.

The 22nd National Sports Festival is scheduled to commence on Friday.
